Northern League Round-up

After a storming start to the season, injuries, suspensions, poor form and sheer bad luck have conspired against Ian Chandler’s Whitley Bay side, who lost the season’s first Northern League Classico 2-0 at defending champions Spennymoor Town. After Spennymoor’s ex-Bay forward Adam Johnston scored a 37th minute penalty both sides were reduced to ten men when Callum Anderson was shown a straight red for a challenge on Spennymoor’s Stephen Capper, who was then dismissed himself after an altercation with the visiting bench. Gavin Cogdon sealed the win after the break, ex-Norton forward Sonny Andrews missing two good chances late on as the home side deservedly took all three points. Bay’s second defeat in a row means Dunston have the league’s only remaining unbeaten record, the Gateshead side’s 3-2 win at Norton leaving them second, two points adrift of Sunderland RCA but with a game in hand. Ex-Middlesbrough forward Andy Campbell, a £1 million signing for Cardiff City in 2002, scored on his debut for Norton after joining the Teessiders from Whitby Town. Following their midweek FA Cup win at Vauxhall Motors, resurgent Ashington thrashed Jarrow Roofing 5-1 to move up to eleventh. Stokesley, Tow Law Town and Billingham Town make up the relegation places after wins for Guisborough and South Shields.

Tonight sees third-placed West Auckland travel to Dunston in what will be the clubs’ fourth meeting of the season. Whitley Bay go to South Shields, while leaders Sunderland RCA – beaten 3-2 by West Auckland at the weekend – will be looking to pick up their tenth three-point haul of the season when they face Guisborough Town.
