Weekend Games

It was the worst of weekends for Newcastle Benfield. Manager Paul Baker resigned “on a matter of principle” after his side had lost 2-1 at home to Sunderland RCA, Mark Davison heading a late winner after Andy Jennings and Paul Anthony had earlier traded goals. Baker’s assistant and long serving Benfield man Alu Bangura takes charge for tonight’s FA Cup replay at South Shields, who won their first league game of the season 5-1 at home to Billingham Synthonia. Spennymoor failed to score again, Dunston UTS holding the champions to a 0-0 draw. Ominously for the rest, Whitley Bay look to have solved last season’s goalscoring problems, winning 4-1 at Jarrow Roofing with two goals from Damon Robson and one each from Lee Kerr and Robbie Dale.

There were ten games in the FA Vase first qualifying round played on Friday and Saturday. Bedlington Terriers forward Anthony Shandran hit six goals against Stokesley for the second time this season, setting up the other three goals in a 9-1 win. Nathan Porritt, once of a subject of a BBC Panorama investigation when Chelsea allegedly offered his agent £150,000 to take him from Middlesbrough as a 15-year-old, scored for Stokesley.

Shandran heads at goal.

A late Peter Watling goal put Team Northumbria top of Division Two last night, the 2-1 win over Northallerton Town taking them two points clear of Darlington RA with a game in hand. Nick Harrison’s side won’t be too disappointed, having won 3-0 at third-placed Alnwick Town on Saturday afternoon to go four points clear of the Northumbrians, and five ahead of the chasing pack.
