Newcastle Benfield blew their 100% record and the chance to go back to the top of the Northern League when they lost 2-1 at home to Dunston UTS last night. Anthony Hume and Lee McAndrew scored for the visitors, Mick Chilton replying for the home side. The result leaves Sunderland RCA in first place with thirteen points from their opening five games. Benfield are second on twelve, with Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe a point behind. Whitley Bay, fourth with ten points, have a game in hand on all of the teams above.
With only a handful of clubs having floodlights, last night saw the final round of midweek Northern Alliance games until the spring. Carlisle City won 2-1 at Harraby Catholic Club to stay top, one point of Heaton Stannington, 4-0 winners at home to Blyth Town. In Division Two, Harton and Westoe won a manic game 5-4 at Wallsend Boys Club.
There were two Northern League Division Two games on Tuesday night, Hebburn Town beating Washington 3-1 to go second in the table behind Darlington RA. Goals from Steven Telford and Andy McIntosh gave Birtley Town their third league win in a row in a 2-1 victory at Chester-le-Street Town.
There were Wearside League wins for champions Ryhope CW, new leaders Redcar Athletic and second placed Darlington Cleveland Bridge. Jarrow stay fourth despite going down 6-4 at Prudhoe.
