Sunderland West End’s 3-2 win at Jarrow was the shock result of last night’s Wearside League programme. Ryhope CW began their title defence with a 4-3 victory over Wolviston, while two of their likely challengers, Redcar Athletic and Darlington Cleveland Bridge, fought out a 3-3 draw. In their first match since switching from the Northern Football Alliance, Peterlee Town were 2-0 away winners at Hartlepool. Fellow newcomers Silksworth Rangers beat Prudhoe Town 1-0, though Gateshead Leam Rangers suffered a second successive defeat, 2-1 at early leaders Annfield Plain.
After their big opening day wins, Willington and Boldon CA both drew 1-1, putting them second and third in the table. With the Sunderland Shipowners’ Cup starting this weekend, Saturday’s only league game sees Kirkbymoorside travel north to take on Annfield Plain. Elsewhere, weather permitting, the Northern League and Northern Alliance get back underway with a full programme of fixtures.
