Football blogger and documentary maker, Scott Johnston is one of four players in the writers’ squad keeping a training diary ahead of July 9th. Recent highlights include a strained foot, “a combination of running and walking” and a stag do in Magaluf. More from Scott on twitter here.
Positions: Used to be a free-scoring striker but now ply my trade in defensive midfield.
Teams played for: Cathkin United, like everyone else from my area. We played in red and white stripes and looked like Sheffield United.
Career highlight: My trial for Rangers…as a centre-forward deployed at right back. In the days before wing backs became fashionable, it wasn’t my greatest game. Rangers still play everyone out of position!
Player you’ve modelled your game on: Charlie Adam. Not the free scoring, set piece specialist but the one who was constantly trying 40-yard wonder passes and kept on shooting from the halfway line.
Andrew Jameson lives in Manchester, where he sings and plays guitar with HOTBEATREPEAT (I’m not shouting, that really is their name). An avid fan of bullet points, Newcastle United and his hometown team Whitley Bay FC, you can find Andrew on stage, on the left of midfield or on twitter here.
- Position(s): Midfield Left
- Teams played for: Wellfield Wanderers FC
- Career highlight: Highlight? Erm, getting a few assists during a 6-2 pre-season friendly win for Wellfield Wanderers. We didn’t win again in15 games once the season started. Needless to say, I’ve had a cracking football career. Oh, I won the Best Player trophy on a football acadmey course – aged 8.
- Player or team you’ve modelled your game on: If you’re a left-sided attacking midfielder, there’s only one person you should ever model your game on – Scott Sellars.
Lining up alongside Andrew in the Fans’ team is Bedlington Terriers supporter Dave Anderson, who recently fulfilled one of his lifetime ambitions by turning out on the Terriers’ Welfare Park pitch. As luck would have it, his other ambition has always been to nutmeg a Glaswegian defensive midfielder before leaving a Metro Radio presenter sprawling helplessly on the floor as he curls a shot past the despairing right hand of a member of the Northern Echo‘s sports desk. Not that there’s much hope of that ever happening.
Teams played for: None regularly. Only the odd charity match.
Career highlight so far: 25-yard strike that arrowed in to the top corner in the recent May Day charity tournament for Macmillan held at Bedlington.
Player or team you’ve modelled your game on: Jimmy Greaves. Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer – although my hairstyle is a bit more reminiscent of Fulham’s Andy Johnson!
