It’s all over in Division Two after Marske United’s 2-0 win at Gilford Park sealed the third and final promotion place. Goalless at half time, Karl Charlton’s 17th of the season and a late second from Chris McGill put the Teesiders – on a run of one league defeat in twenty-four games – five points clear of North Shields with just one game left to play.
In Division One, Whitley Bay slumped to a shock 4-1 defeat at Billingham Town, enabling Consett to leapfrog them into second after thrashing Newcastle Benfield 4-0 thanks to a Gavin Barton hat-trick and one from ex-Newcastle and Torquay United forward Marc Walton. Consett – one point clear of Bay and with a much better goal difference – host Ashington in their final game of the season, while the Seahorses travel to both Spennymoor and Benfield. In the night’s other game, Ashington warmed up for the weekend with a 3-0 win at Norton, top-scorer Andrew Johnson grabbing two and setting ex-Newcastle winger Jonny Godsmark up for the third.
