Spennymoor confirmed as champions, but will Bay and Marske be going up?

Congratulations to Spennymoor Town, Northern League Division One champions for a second successive year after last night’s 6-1 home win over West Allotment Celtic. A Calvin Smith strike and two goals apiece for Steven Richardson and Leon Ryan put Spennymoor five up before half-time, with ex-Middlesbrough and Durham City striker Richardson completing his hat-trick before Paul Gardiner hit an 84th-minute consolation for the visitors. The trophy will be presented after Saturday’s final home game of the season – against FA Vase finalists Whitley Bay.

Bay – two points ahead of Newcastle Benfield in second – travel to Billingham Town tonight with whispers about a promotion U-turn beginning to intensify. As long as the Seahorses hold on to second they’ll be eligible for a place in next season’s Evostik North. Whether they end up playing there remains, for now, a matter of conjecture. Things are more clear cut in Division Two, where Marske United travel to play Gilford Park. Three points and the Teeside club are promoted, anything less and it’s winner takes all in Saturday’s game against North Shields.
