The origins of Norton and Stockton Ancients date back to the late 1950s when the Norton Cricket Club Trust decided to start a football section to provide a winter option for its members. Accepted into the Teesside League, the club won its first silverware, the Durham Minor Cup, in 1968 under the name of Norton Cricket Club Trust FC. Over the following years the club won one Teesside League Cup and three North Riding Amateur Cups.
In 1980 Stockton Football Club was wound up and its assets transferred to Norton. Members of the two boards agreed to form a single club called Norton and Stockton Ancients – Ancients being the nickname of the Stockton club, which had been founded in August 1882 and was one of the team teams to play in the inaugural Northern League season. The renamed club was a founding member of Northern League Division Two in 1982, gaining promotion to the top flight in 2009. The following year it reached the quarter final of the FA Vase, losing 3-0 at Barwell. In 2010 the club recorded its record attendance of 1,526 in an FA Cup third qualifying round tie with FC United of Manchester.
