Northern Leagues United Training: Birtley Town

The final training session before Saturday’s Northern Leagues United took place at Birtley Town last night. A mixed eleven of fans and writers spluttered through an hour-long session taken by Birtley boss Scott Oliver. We had been scheduled to have a work out alongside the Northern League Division Two club’s first team squad until we found out they’d be running up and down the steps at Tynemouth beach. As it was, ten minutes of three-touch football had us searching for our lungs while we tried out a kind of innovative don’t move and kick the ball long approach. Unsuccessfully.

Scott explains the basic principles of ball retention. Iain Macintosh, Andy Hudson, James Williams and Metro Radio’s Joel Goldman look a bit confused.

Ryan Davison adjusts his shirt while his Leazes Terrace co-editor Chris Smith seeks out the camera. Both disgracefully clad in white boots.

Ryan discovers he’ll be playing against ‘Dynamo’ Joe Daunt.

Primary colours. Iain Macintosh models “the worst football shirt of all time”. And, shortly afterwards, the best diving header (but only if you include ones straight to the opposition).

Joining the pantheon of the truly great footballing sides. Possibly. With added gurning. Back (left to right): Chris Smith, Ryan Davison, Kristan Heneage, Joe Daunt, Gareth Johnson, Dave Jameson. Front: Joel Goldman, Andy Hudson, James Williams. Finger and face pulling: Iain Macintosh.  Photo: Michael Hudson.

Thanks to Scott Oliver, Trevor Armstrong and all at Birtley Town for hosting the session. See you there from 11.30 on Saturday.

  1. Michael wrote “See you there from 11.30 on Saturday”. I thought the first match (Juniors) kicked off at 11:00?
